Memorial Day

Memorial Day Activities Scheduled

The Millersburg Memorial Day Revitalization Committee will continue its efforts this year  to restore the Millersburg Memorial Day Parade to the stature that it had in years past. The committee, along with the Blaine G. Walter VFW Post No. 5507 and the Steven R. Day American Legion Post No. 326, will host the event.

The committee encourages churches, civic organizations and area youth to take part in the parade to honor and recognize the importance of those who have and are serving our country and in particular, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The revitalization was the vision of Lou Jane Miller who reflected often on the days when the Millersburg Memorial Day Parade was a major event, bringing the community together in a spirit of patriotism, pride and love for one another.

Miller’s uncle, Blaine G. Walter, was an early military casualty of World War II. He died at the Battle of Guadalcanal, and the local VFW post is named in his honor.

The activities will be held Monday, May 29.  There will be designated parking.

This year, the long anticipated unveiling of the Veterans Banners will be held at 8:30 a.m.  The fire alarm will sound to signify the unveiling.  All banner sponsors will receive an email stating where their banner will be placed prior to May 29th.
Banners applications will be taken until April 17, 2017 and are available at the Weis Store in Millersburg.

Free coffee and donuts will be available at Williams French Fries on the square from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and Vocalist Pirjo Mace will perform at this time.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at the Gazebo, with patriotic music including the Millersburg High School Band, Lenkerville Elementary Students and the Voice of Democracy winners. Seating for veterans will be available.

The keynote speaker is Millersburg native Britt Isenburg.

Also this year, there will be a Childrens/Baby Parade with prizes awarded for ages birth to age 12.  First prize is $200; Second prize is $100; and Third prize is $50; and HM $25.  Any questions regarding the parade should be directed to Cindy Southard at 692-4954.   The parade contestants must be Patriotic in nature.

All children who participate in the parade including Lenkerville Students will receive coupons for a free hot dog, drink and ice cream to be redeemed at Williams French Fries for that day.

The parade will follow the services and will be under the direction of Parade Marshals Dave and Ted Fralick. All participants will meet at the square.

After the parade, a roll call of all deceased veterans of all wars will be read.
